The Philippine Normal University, then known as the Philippine Normal School (PNS) was founded on September 1,1901 through Act of the Philippine Constitution as the first institution of higher learning organized during the American Regime. PNS was converted into the Philippine Normal College (PNC) on June 18, 1949.

On July 1972, PNC was allowed by law to offer advance degrees – Ph.D. and Ed. D.- and other academic programs relevant to the training of teachers, school supervisors, administrators, researchers and other educational specialists. It became a full pledged university on December 26, 1991 under Republic Act 7168. For more than a hundred years since its founding in 1901, the university has been regarded as the premier institution for the training of teachers and educational leaders. At present, PNU has four provincial campuses in the country: in Alicia, Isabela; in Lopez, Quezon; in Cadiz, Negros Occidental; and in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. Policies are laid down by the Board and the observance and implementation of such is vested on the University President, who is assisted by three Vice Presidents (in Academics, in Planning, Research and Extension, and in Administration, Finance and Development) and other executive officials of the University. By virtue of Republiuc Act 9647, an act designating the Philippine Normal University as the country’s National Center for Teacher Education, appropriating funds therefore, and for the
other purposes. This was approved and signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last June 30, 2009 As of the academic year 2014-2015, Philippine Normal University was officially bear its name as PNU- VISAYAS Campus.

can directly inspire and shape the quality of Filipino students and graduates in the country and
the world.

PNU Visayas as the Environment and Green Technology Education Hub commits to the protection and preservation of the environment and promotion of renewable resources and clean energy technologies through education. The campus further commits to integrate environmental management into its operational and decision-making processes, curricular programs, co-curricular activities, research and extension endeavors through compliance with international Quality Standards.
